The Woods is a covenant-governed planned HOA community. WHOA (pronounced WOE-ah) is composed of the owners of over 1,273 properties at The Woods, a diverse community nestled in the mountains of West Virginia’s eastern panhandle. Homes in The Woods range from smaller bungalows and chalets set amid the trees to larger contemporary homes beside two beautiful golf courses or nestled on the mountainside. The Woods also has three groups of lovely townhomes, each with its own additional cluster association and common areas.
We are both a water conservation community and a Firewise community. We have an on-site book lending library and a medical equipment lending program. The community members have created many different clubs, social activities, interest groups, and events. The Woods sits beside the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area, over 22,000 acres of mostly oak and pine forest, and home of the 205 acre Sleepy Creek Lake. Hikers, kayakers, fishing enthusiasts, and hunters all enjoy the area freely.
Our annual fireworks are the best for miles around and the yearly WoodsFest brings together some of the area’s most renowned artisans. Winter Camp Park is open to all residents of The Woods and contains pavilions, picnic tables, and lots of room to play. Social events occur at that site from May through October. With such a variety of activities and natural beauty, homeowners never run out of interesting and relaxing things to do.
WHOA is served by a volunteer Board of Directors, nine homeowners elected by their neighbors for revolving three-year terms. To ensure everyone is fully represented, the community is composed of three districts, each voting for three representatives on the board. Committees supplement the work of the Board and the WHOA staff, representing the interests of the homeowners.
The WHOA Board is authorized to make decisions for the community and is responsible for ensuring adherence to covenants and policies, maintaining and plowing 20 miles of roads and caring for the ecosystem. WHOA is supported by Property Management People, Inc., a company that employs and provides benefits for staff, bills and collects WHOA fees from homeowners, and maintains modern communication and finance systems for the benefit of all.
